. . . Hindu cosmology. According to Vedic reckoning we are now in Kali Yuga, an unspiritual age of ignorance, sin, and short lifespans.

The other three ages are: Satya Yuga (Age of Wisdom and Truth), the Treta Yuga (Silver Age), and the Dwapara Yuga (Copper Age). Each has ascending and descending segments.

By the reckoning of  the saint Sri Yukteswar we are deep into the descending half of the Kali Yuga, but with still hundreds of years to go before reaching bottom. Other less fortunate projections by earlier scholars place thousands of years of decline still ahead of us. But some contemporary research gives us cause for optimism. A scholarly analysis by John Major-Jenkins places us right now at the nadir of Kali Yuga
, soon to turn back up in the ascending phase (see link below). If this is true we will be technically within the new 12,000-year ascending cycle in our lifetimes. The ascending Kali Yuga should bring a gradual reversal of social decay and chaos. (This more optimistic reckoning happens to correlate with many prophecies of major world change pegged to the year 2012.) Links to seven informative sites are provided below.

SACRED WORD TRUST

From "Kali Yuga, Rites of Passage and Modern Science by Octavian Sarbatoare

The Mahanirvana Tantra extensively describes particularities of the Kali Age . . . as presented by Lord Shiva Himself to his wife Parvati.

"O Sovereign Mistress of Kaula doctrine! When the Heavenly Stream (i.e. the Ganges river) is at some places broken and at others diverted from its course, then know that the Kali Age has become strong. ... When women become difficult of control, heartless and quarrelsome, and calumniators of their husbands, then know that the Kali Age has become strong. When men become subject to women and slaves of lust, oppressors of their friends and Teachers, then know that the Kali Age has become strong. When the fertility of the earth has gone and yields a poor harvest, when the clouds yield scanty rain, and trees give poor fruit, then know that the Kali Age has become strong. When brothers, kinsmen, and companions, prompted by the desire to obtain things of small value, will strike one another, then know that the Kali Age has become strong. When the open partaking of flesh and liquor will pass without condemnation and punishment, when the secret drinking will prevail, then know that the Kali Age has become strong." (Avalon, 1972, p. 52; Ch. IV, 49-55).
